چکیده

This full-day workshop explores the Production of Referring Expressions (PRE) from different perspectives. It follows two earlier workshops on the same theme, which were associated with two earlier CogSci conferences. The first of these, PRE-CogSci 2009, focussed on the interplay between computational and empirical methods.1 The second, PRECogSci 2011, broadened this theme to include work on dialogue and linguistic theory.2 Both events were highly successful, with each containing over 20 presentations and an audience of over 60 participants. Following the first workshop, the Topics in Cognitive Science journal published an issue containing 8 peer-reviewed articles selected from 28 full paper submissions (Krahmer et al. 2012). Following the second workshop, we are finalising a Special Issue of the journal Language and Cognitive Processes; accepted papers are expected to appear in 2013-14. A survey of research, by 2 of the organisers, on the generation of referring expressions that came out in the journal Computational Linguistics in March 2012 has since been downloaded over 700 times. This third PRE workshop is part of CogSci 2013. It will be different from its predecessors in two ways. Firstly, a range of new intellectual themes will be explored that have emerged in recent years. Second, the workshop will be coupled with a satellite event, which will be separately funded, and which will be devoted to the role of reference in practical applications. We expand on these issues below.

PRE-CogSci 2011 - Bridging the gap between computational, empirical and theoretical approaches to reference

The PRE-CogSci 2011 workshop is a follow up to the first workshop on the Production of Referring Expressions: Bridging the gap between computational and empirical approaches to reference (PRE-CogSci 2009), organised on 29 July 2009 as part of the Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society (CogSci 2009) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This event was very successful, with 23 oral and poster p...

Models and Empirical Data for the Production of Referring Expressions

This paper introduces a special issue of Language, Cognition and Neuroscience dedicated to Production of Referring Expressions: Models and Empirical Data, focusing on models of reference production that make empirically testable predictions, as well as on empirical work that can inform the design of such models. In addition to introducing the volume, this paper also gives an overview of recent ...

Towards Cognitive Social Machines for Bridging the Cognitive-Computational Gap in Creativity and Creative Reasoning

This position paper presents a view on bridging the cognitivecomputational gap in the field of creativity, creative reasoning and problem solving. Starting from the levels of Cognition and Computation, their potential bootstrap is discussed in relation to the concept of Cognitive Social Machines. Five distinct aspects of bridging the cognitivecomputational gap in creative reasoning using cognit...

Structured cognitive representations and complex inference in neural systems

The dream of cognitive neuroscience has always been a seamless integration of cognitive representations with neural machinery, but—despite decades of work—fundamental gaps remain. Part of the problem is that many contemporary theories of cognition are formulated in terms of representations and computations that are quite different from those used in computational neuroscience. Bridging this gap...

Workshop: Bridging the Gap: Is Logic and Automated Reasoning a Foundation for Human Reasoning?

Reasoning is a core ability in human cognition. Its power lies in the ability to theorize about the environment, to make implicit knowledge explicit, to generalize given knowledge and to gain new insights. It is a well researched topic in cognitive psychology and cognitive science and over the past decade impressive results have been achieved. Early researchers starting with Störing (1908) ofte...
